Tips for choosing a destination
Set a budget first. Before you spin, remove anywhere you honestly can’t afford right now. Flights are usually the biggest cost, so compare a few sample fares for the places on your list. Think about the season. A beach can be perfect in one month and rained out in the next. Hurricane season affects the Caribbean from roughly June to November, many national park roads close in winter, and European cities get crowded and pricey in July and August. Trim your list to places that are at their best when you plan to go.
Match the trip length to travel time. A long weekend doesn’t pair well with a 20-hour journey. For two or three days, stick to road trips or short flights. Save far-flung bucket list places for when you have a week or more, so you are not spending half the trip getting there and recovering from jet lag.
